The international association “Together against pain” is proposing a campaign “Towards a pain-free hospital”, whether it be local (one particular hospital), regional or national (several hospitals), which would comprise as a minimum the following steps :

The formation of a steering committee

A campaign “Towards a pain-free hospital” (local, regional or national) normally starts by the creation of a steering committee for the campaign.

The task of the steering committee is to organise and coordinate awareness of the problem, information and training of the professionals, so as to develop the skills of all the carers, from the laymen to the specialists.

According to the experience gathered since 1992, the steering committees of the campaigns will :
  • create a group for awareness, communication and development
  • identify the places and all the situations in which pain could be avoided, or better, relieved
  • develop the material which is necessary and specific to departments: a manual or guide for professionals, posters, protocols for evaluating pain
  • organise the awareness and information of patients, families and the public, by publishing a leaflet for patients
  • evaluate specific spontaneous projects and propose models to guarantee their quality
  • assign seals or stamps of quality

The adoption of a methodology
  • What pains ?
  • When ?
  • How ?
  • Who makes the evaluation ?
  • Wich patients ?
  • From Day Zero to Day 91

The evaluation of the results of the campaign

The evaluation of the results of the campaign consists in compiling the following statistics:
  • a measure of medicinal consumption from Day Zero to Day 91 by the different services according to normal measures of morphinomimetics
  • number of patients suffering pain from Day Zero to Day 91, according to the opinion of the research team
  • number of patients who report having pain, from Day Zero to Day 91
  • evolution of the difference between the opinion of the patients and that of the team
