The objective of the international campaign “Towards a pain-free hospital ” is to implement and coordinate a truly unifying programme in several countries. Each local or national campaign touches all the hospitals which volunteer and wish to improve the relief of all the pain from which patients can suffer in a hospital, thereby perhaps doubling the present rate of relief which is between 30 and 40%, by means of actions and simple indications. These involve our partners: the patients and their family circle.
Indeed at present and for the past 40 years or more, except for specialist units, the pain of hospital patients is not relieved by more than 30 or 40% of cases, in spite of all the progress made in medicine and technology. Doctors are insufficiently trained and are often unaware of their deficiencies in this respect, whereas they could be relieving more than 90% of the pain of their patients.
This realisation has led us to conceive a new approach to the situation through informing the patient and the patient’s family about the current possibilities of treatments, about the uselessness of all pain, whether in childbirth, at the end of life, in cases of acute or chronic pain caused by illness, or by medical or surgical examinations or treatments at any age.
